Looking after your log burner!
Like many household appliances the more care and attention you give them the longer they last, and a wood burning stove is no different. With proper and regular maintenance you can give your stove a long and happy life while allowing you to get the most out of it.
Here are a few tips to help keep your wood-burning stove in good working order:
- Leave the door open when not in use this allows for air ventilation to stop corrosion
- Clean the glass – use a paper towel or crumpled newspaper dip it in the ash to keep the stove glass clean
- Empty the ash pan daily to prevent damage to the burner
- Check the rope seals which prevents excess air getting into the stove
- Have the chimney swept bi-annually is recommended which will involve checking the baffle/ throat plate
- Burn the correct firewood – for example burning wet logs produces a heavy smoke that can condense onto the cooler sides of the flue or chimney, which can produce a tar residues that builds up.
